Provides original content on diseases and prevention, injuries, disabilities, health risks, and health information for specific populations. Also links to federal and international health agencies and organizations, including the World Health Organization.

 

Food and Drug Administration: http://www.fda.gov/

Topics include food and food safety, human and animal drugs, biologics, cosmetics, medical devices, toxicology research, more. Health information is also available for specific populations including seniors, women, and kids.

“A gateway consumer health and human services information web site from the U.S. government,” designed to “to improve consumers' access to federal health and human services information online . . . [providing] information resources from the federal government, state and local agencies, not for profit organizations, and universities.”

 

HealthWeb: http://healthweb.org/

HealthWeb is a collaborative project of the health sciences libraries and is supported by the National Library of Medicine.  The subject directory of health topics provides organized access to non-commercial and evaluated health websites.

 

Mayo Clinic:  http://www.mayoclinic.com

Mayo’s site offers understandable articles on many different areas of consumer health written by physicians, specialists, and educators.  Articles are reviewed for accuracy if the content is older than 3 years.  Ads are accepted, but clearly marked and separated from site content.

 

MedlinePlus:   http://www.medlineplus.gov/

An excellent consumer health website from the National Library of Medicine.  Highly recommended as your first stop for any health information.

 

Merck Source:  http://www.mercksource.com

A general purpose site for health information from the well-respected medical publisher, Merck.  Also links to the full text of their popular book for the medical layman, the Merck Manual Home Edition.

 

NOAH: New York Online Access to Health: http://www.noah-health.org/

NOAH is a bilingual consumer health site started as a joint effort by The City University of New York, The Metropolitan New York Library Council, The New York Academy of Medicine and The New York Public Library, with a scientific advisory board to assist with editing content.
