Amazon.com Johanna Spyri's classic story of a young orphan sent to live with her grumpy grandfather in the Swiss Alps is retold in it's entirety in this beautifully bound hardcover edition. Heidi has charmed and intrigued readers since it's original publication in 1880. Much more than a children's story, the narrative is also a lesson on the precarious nature of freedom, a luxury too often taken for granted. Heidi almost loses her liberty as she is ripped away from the tranquility of the mountains to tend to a sick cousin in the city. Happily, all's well that ends well, and the reader is left with only warm, fuzzy thoughts. Spryi's story will never grow wearisome--and this is a very appealing edition. --Naomi Gesinger

Book Description The story of Heidi was written over one hundred years ago, however, it is far from a period piece. In the Swiss Alps, where it is set, a hundred years is just the blink of an eye. We see in her the daughter that every mother dreams of having and every little girl dreams of being. Her presence makes us happy, and so her story has endured. This deluxe Children’s Classic edition is produced with high-quality, leatherlike binding with gold stamping, full-color covers, colored endpapers with a book nameplate. Some of the other titles in this series include: Anne of Green Gables, Black Beauty, King Arthur and His Knights, Little Women, and The Secret Garden.

  • Heidi (5)
Heidi is one of the best books I have ever read! This classic story was a great way for me to learn about life in the Alps of Switzerland. Heidi was my favorite character because she was always happy, even through tough times and getting used to things that she did not normally do. I would recommend this book to anyone who loves being outdoors, especially girls. It is extremely interesting for me to see another way of life than my own.

When little Heidi is left in the Swiss Alps with the heathen grandfather, the whole village worries. They knows the stories of the barbarric man who lives alone up in the mountain, far away from village life. How could a man like that possible raise a child? But Heidi is a very special child.
Heidi is an orphan, who hates her Aunt, who had been raising her. She is very glad to be living in the little cabin, and adjusts to life very easily. She loves the fresh, mountain air, the pine trees, and the tall, clean miles of grass of the alps. She loves playing with the goates her grandfather owns, and goes with Peter each day so they can graze. She loves her grandfather, who finds Heidi to be his weakness. And she loves Peter's grandmother, a blind, lonely lady, who's light lies completely in Heidi. But then, years later, her aunt returns. She kidnaps little Heidi, takes her to Germany, and sells her to a family. The girl in the family needs a playmate desperately, since she is confined to a wheelchair and has no playmates. Heidi changes everything in the strict, proper house. She even help Clara learn to walk.
But Heidi pines for the mountains, for Peter, for the pine trees, and for her grandfather.
A classic. Very sweet and well done.
  • Heidi is a must-read! (5)
I give Heidi, by Johanna Spyri, five out of five stars.
I give this book five stars because it is full of details that make the characters come alive. The characters are part of the five stars too, because they are interesting and seem like real people. Some characters in the book are, Heidi, the sweet girl who can melt the heart of anybody, Detie, Heidi's aunt, Uncle Alp, Heidi's rough, but lovable grandfather, Peter a goatherd and Heidi's good friend, Bridget, Peter's mother, Grannie, Peter's grandmother, Clara, a paralytic girl who is cheered up by Heidi, Miss Rottenmeier, a mean housekeeper, Sebastian, a nice servant, Mr. Sesemann, Clara's kind father, Grandmamma, Clara's grandmother who is a loving woman and treats Heidi like her own granddaughter, and Doctor Classen, a caring doctor.
The other reason I give Heidi five stars is because the storyline is wonderful. Heidi starts off the wonderfully classic story by moving in with her grandfather and happily adjusting to life in the Swiss Alps with him. She couldn't stay with her aunt, because her aunt couldn't take her to work with her everyday. She becomes friends with everyone she meets and is happy. Then one day Detie, her aunt, comes and takes her away to Frankfurt, to stay with Clara, a lonesome paralytic girl. Heidi brightens up Clara's life, but then she becomes homesick. The kind doctor, Doctor Classen, notices that Heidi isn't doing well and sends her home to get better. She goes home and waits for Clara and Mr. Sesemann to come visit her at her home in the Alps. Clara becomes ill and the doctor will not let her leave her home in Frankfurt, because he is afraid something might happen to her. The doctor had recently lost a daughter and was very sad, so Mr. Sesemann and Clara convinced him to go visit Heidi in their place. The doctor goes to the Alps and regains his strength. When he returns to Frankfurt he immediately tell Clara and her father to go. Clara comes but her father cannot, so instead Grandmamma came. Clara stayed with Heidi, but Grandmamma didn't. In the end Clara gets so much strength that she can walk! I think this book is wonderful, because it has a great theme, friendship always wins.
I also recommend any other classic stories.
  • HEIDI the extraordinary (5)
Heidi is a very calm girl. Her aunt, Detie, took care of her for a long time and now she wants to take her to her grandfather (Uncle Alp). Everyone in the village of Dorfli is very scared of him. They don't think that Detie should take Heidi there, but she does it anyways. Uncle Alp takes her inside the hut. Heidi meets Peter and they become friends. After two years of living there, her aunt, Detie, comes back and takes Heidi back to Frankfurt. In Frankfurt, Detie gives Heidi away to a rich family. One child named Clara becomes friends with Heidi. Mrs. Rottenmeir is the governess. She thinks there are ghosts in the house. She calls the doctor to come and stay overnight to find out if it is really true. He sees Heidi sleepwalking and says she must return back to her grandfather. That morning, Sebastian takes Heidi back to her grandfather.
